Fall has finally come to Austin. I can tell because the trail at Ladybird Lake (do you like how I showed off by using the fancy new name?) is so crowded that it is hard to walk above 2 miles per hour. I love seeing all the people and pets out enjoying the trail! People with convertibles are riding with the top down every day now because October is one of the two months per year in Central Texas that has reliably pleasant convertible weather. The leaves on Mt. Bonnel Road are a gorgeous array of colors, so enjoy the scenic drive but be careful not to be so mesmerized that you swerve off the cliffs into the lake.
The parking situation downtown on weekends is a definite sign that fall has arrived in all its glory. Before going downtown in Austin during the fall, you have to research the football/concert/marathon/festival schedules in order to develop a sophisticated algorithm determining when and where you might have a chance of finding a parking spot. Another telltale sign of fall is that the cute young Hot Child in the City types have lost their tans from being out on the lake all summer and now have to resort to wearing tights under their tiny miniskirts. I take this as my personal cue to give up on using fake tanning lotion on my legs. Since I have a baby to deal with this year, I may even give up on shaving them by Thanksgiving. I'm all about low-maintenance these days.
The pumpkin patches and haunted hayride signs are up all over town, Junior Leaguers are stressing about which shift they will work at the Christmas Affair, and my mailbox is filling up with catalogues all showing the must-have Christmas decorations for this year. According to Restoration Hardware, Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn and CB2, the trendy things to buy this year are wreaths, garland with or without red berries, candles, and Christmas trees. Does someone seriously get paid to design a new line of Christmas items for these retailers each year? I want that job. Hmmm, let's go with wreaths, garland, candles, and trees again. That should sell well. Where do I pick up my fat paycheck?
I hope that everyone is enjoying fall as much as I am! I am especially excited about the extensive selection of pumpkin-flavored items that are offered this time of year. Pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, pumpkin soup, pumpkin lattes, pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin ice cream- YUM! When pumpkin gives way to gingerbread, I will have to write another post about how winter has arrived.

I LOVE the Fall too. The boys and I spent most of the day outside--too nice to be in the house.
Your post made me miss Austin. I always loved fall when I lived there. Maybe someday we'll make it back.
